In defense of an open university

Improving Unicamp's infrastructure and bringing the University closer to society are goals for the second half of the Dean Antonio José de Almeida Meirelles' administration. The director spoke with reporter Patrícia Lauretti in the second edition of the program “Conversa com o retor”, a production of the Executive Secretariat for Communication (SEC) – Radio and TV Unicamp, with technical works by Kléber Casabllanca, João Ricardo Luiz and Felipe Menani. Meirelles highlighted Unicamp's participation in the Innovation and Competitiveness Council of FIESP.

He stated that the entity proposes a kind of “new industrialization” of the country and the state of São Paulo, focused on the agendas of environmental preservation, green economy and social agendas. According to Meirelles, Unicamp should sign an agreement with Sebrae to assist in the process of transferring technologies and knowledge generated at the University.

According to the dean, the University's accounts are balanced and there is a budget gap that will allow several investments in infrastructure, especially in the Faculty of Applied Sciences (FCA) and the Faculty of Dentistry of Piracicaba (FOP). Meirelles also said that, in Campinas, there is an expectation of resuming work on the theater at the Institute of Arts and of renovating the roofs of several buildings to place photovoltaic energy panels.

Another issue addressed was that of student permanence. The dean highlighted the increase in the value and number of scholarships for Unicamp students. But, according to him, the size of resources needed to maintain the permanence process may come up against budget restrictions in the future. For this reason, the teacher once again defended the idea of scholarship programs involving students in actions of interest to governments, such as pedagogical residencies in high school.

Unicamp's dean also commented on the new benefits for civil servants, spoke about the career progression process, salary readjustments and several other topics. Check it out on the show!
